Personally I use Granny Smith apples when I prepare this dish. To be authentic, however, you would want to use a sweeter variety. You can also prepare this with either a boneless slow cooked leg of lamb in ginger beer (which seems to be quite popular in supermarkets these days) or one with the full bone in the leg portion.
Take time once a month to do something special. Go to a museum, or a movie or concert. Put money aside on a weekly basis slow cooked leg of lamb even if it's for this purpose. This is recharge time.
A slow cooker leg of lamb well stocked pantry is just as important as a well stocked freezer. Thus, you should also stock your pantry up with staple items like vegetables, fruits, soups and more. This way, you have everything at hand when you prepare food. Stocking up on staples can save you much time as well. Grocery stores constantly have sales, so these are basically the best time to hoard on products.
But sometimes these soul foods are needed. My grandmother made a lamb stew that was rich in vegetables leg of lamb at lidl meats. It's rich in nutrients and when sick, it was wonderful. She made it from scratch, using fresh vegetables and meat purchased from a local butcher. She used herbs and spices, and not too much salt. Everything was healthy. When you are down, it's sometimes difficult to choose healthy foods over soul foods. I generally recommend skipping foods that were fried or have no vegetable component.
